Readmission

General Conditions and Requirements

Students who

  • have not enrolled at the University for a semester or more, and
  • who are not on an educational leave of absence,

must be formally readmitted, regardless of whether they are on an approved leave of absence. For readmission, a student must apply (see Applying below) and subsequently be cleared by his or her academic dean, the Department of Student Health, and the Office of the Dean of Students. Students who have entered a degree program at another institution, however, must reapply to the University as transfer students and are not guaranteed acceptance.

A student in good academic standing is usually readmitted without difficulty.

Students must resolve financial obligations before their application for readmission to the College can be processed. Students should contact the Bursar's Office, (434) 924-4265 if they aware of any possible financial problems in this regard.

NOTE: Once a student is readmitted to the College, they must reactivate their U.Va. e-mail account as the College now sends all correspondence via e-mail.

Returning after Suspension or Academic Warning

Students returning from suspension or on academic warning must submit with their application for readmission a plan that

  1. Addresses their readiness to return to full-time study, and
  2. Outlines by semester those courses leading to the completion of their degree.

Returning for 5th or later semester

Students returning for their fifth or later semester must have their plan endorsed by a major advisor.

Returning after Medical Withdrawal

Students withdrawn for medical reasons from the University must have health clearance from the Department of Student Health , (434) 924-5362, before being readmitted. Their readmission application will be considered incomplete until this is done.

A plan must also be submitted with their application for readmission that

  1. Addresses their readiness to return to full-time study, and
  2. Outlines by semester those courses leading to the completion of their degree

Students returning for their fifth or later semester must have their plan endorsed by a major advisor.

Returning International Students

International students on an F1 or J1 student visa must also contact the International Studies Office to determine their eligibility to re-enter the U.S.and resume their studies. They will need written clearance from the International Studies Office, Minor Hall, (434) 982-3010.

Applying

To apply, submit a Readmission Application to the College of Arts and Sciencez. Virginia residents must also submit an PDF document icon Application for Virginia In-State Educational Privileges (.pdf, 154KB).

Completed forms should be returned, 30 days in advance of the next University enrollment period, to:
