Requirements
International admissions applicants are subject to language proficiency, visa and financial requirements in addition to regular admissions requirements.
Application Process
With a few exceptions, international admissions applicants should follow the normal admissions application process. These exceptions are as follows:
- If for some reason you cannot use the online admissions application, you may download a version of the
Application Form (.pdf, 467KB) and
Application Instructions (.pdf, 167KB) to print and mail. Please be aware that mailed applications may take longer to process than those submitted online. Remember to provide adequate time for postal delivery when using this method.
- When sending official transcripts from schools located in non-English-speaking countries, have each institution submit both the original language record plus an English direct translation.
- You must submit a photograph showing your full face.
- TOEFL scores must be sent directly to this university by the Educational Testing Service. You must make the necessary arrangements with Educational Testing Service. Official TOEFL score reports must be received by April 1. You should, therefore, take the test no later than January. The institution code for the University of Virginia is 5820 . The required TOEFL score is 600 (paper-based test), 250 (computer-based test), 90 (internet-based test) or an IELT score of 7.0. TOEFL scores are valid for two years from the test date. International students must take the TOEFL or the IELT.
- A properly documented
"Financial Guarantee and Personal Data for Foreign National Applicants" form (.doc), if you are offered admission to the University. Fellowship aid or other financial support may be recommended through the academic department; however, many students must plan to provide for their own financial support from personal funds. A minimum of $38,000 U.S. (in U.S. funds) is needed for a single student, exclusive of travel, for one academic year at the graduate level before an I-20 Form can be issued for a student visa. If you are married and accompanied by your spouse, this amount is $45,000. (These amounts are subject to change.)
